Whether you love or hate the NFL Draft, there is one thing we can all agree on: The videos of draftees talking with their new coach and/or general manager are great.
And none was better than the Chiefs’ video of Nebraska running back Emmett Johnson, who was selected in the fifth round of last weekend’s NFL Draft. Johnson shed tears as he talked with coach Andy Reid, GM Brett Veach and Chiefs CEO and chairman Clark Hunt.
But Johnson’s phone didn’t stop ringing after that. It wasn’t long before he heard from Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the three-time Super Bowl MVP.
In an interview with Hurrdat Sports, Johnson recalled hearing from a number of his new teammates, and how it impressed him.
“He was the first person to text me after I got selected,” Johnson said of Mahomes, the two-time NFL MVP. “He was just like, ‘Let’s get it, bro.’ You know, he gave me his number and everything, and now, like, we’ve been in touch. (Travis) Kelce was really pumped up, too. Though it took him a couple days, but he texted me. He was like, ‘Man, I’ve been out here for a while. If you need something, just let me know.’ It was really welcoming to see them two, Rashee Rice, (Xavier) Worthy, all of them kind of just texted me.
“I feel like that just is credit to like how they do things there at Kansas City. I feel like it’s a big brotherhood. So that’s what Nebraska was too, which is, you know, huge. And hearing from them, it meant a lot to me. It was really welcoming.”
Johnson, who rushed for 1,451 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, had a message for those Chiefs players.
“I told them, I said, ‘You know, I’m excited to be here, but I’m ready to get to work.’ I think Kelce was like, Let’s f-ing do it. Let’s do it. That’s kind of how he is. But yeah, I’m excited to get to work with them boys. Legendary offense, legendary program.”
