The Royals were down three runs with two outs in the ninth inning on Sunday and had no one on base, and Baseball Reference’s Win Probability Chart gave the Angels a 100% chance of winning.

That’s an indication of how stunning the Royals’ 11-9 win over the Angels in 10 innings was at Kauffman Stadium.

Vinnie Pasquantino hit a triple to start the ninth inning rally and Salvador Perez followed with an RBI single. Jac Caglianone then hit a game-tying home run. In the 10th, the Angels took a 9-8 lead and had an 84% chance of victory when the Royals had two on with two outs.

But Lane Thomas’ three-run homer won it for the Royals, who hope that victory kick-starts sustained success.

It was not a great day for Royals starting pitcher Seth Lugo, who allowed seven runs (all earned) on 14 hits in 6 1/3 innings. The Angels were up 2-0 after just three pitches when Mike Trout hit a home run in the first inning.

The Angels then scored four in the second inning but Lugo was able to right the ship and keep the bullpen from being overworked.

Lugo, who also struck out three and walked one, had an outing that hadn’t been seen by a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball history, according to the X account Pitchergami.

Should that line be matched, here’s guessing that future pitcher would take the loss. Lugo didn’t. But he did make a bit of MLB history.
