Chiefs will be seventh team in NFL history with this special backfield designation
Shortly after the Chiefs signed running back Kenneth Walker III, he was contacted by quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Making a new teammate feel at home is the kind of thing Mahomes does regularly. And that’s how Walker felt last week when he met Mahomes at the team facility.
“It was cool to meet him — a real genuine person,” Walker said of Mahomes.
And, like Walker, Mahomes has won a Super Bowl MVP award.
That means the Chiefs will be one of the few teams in NFL history to have a quarterback with a Super Bowl MVP award hand off the ball to a running back, who has won that hardware.
Only six other teams have had two Super Bowl MVPs in their backfield in NFL history, according to X user Chase Snyder. One of those teams was the Chiefs, who had two players who won a Super Bowl MVP with another team.
The other five teams with a Super Bowl MVP quarterback and running back combo had the players win the trophy with that franchise.
