  • Vinnie Pasquantino hit three home runs and propelled Italy to a key WBC win.
  • Italy’s win meant Team USA no longer had a guaranteed quarterfinal spot.
  • Fans circulated Tony Soprano memes after Pasquantino’s postgame “You’re welcome, USA.”

No one may have been happier than Mark DeRosa to see Italy thump Mexico 9-1 on Wednesday in the World Baseball Classic.

DeRosa, the Team USA manager, apparently thought his team had booked its place in the knockout rounds of the WBC before playing Italy on Tuesday night.

Thanks in part to Royals outfielder Jac Caglianone, Italy upset Team USA and DeRosa soon realized that his team needed help to advance to the quarterfinals.

Fortunately, Italy came through by beating Mexico.

Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino hit three home runs for Italy and looked directly into the camera in a postgame interview and said: “You’re welcome, USA.”

A lonely nation turned its eyes to Pasquantino as he put on a show Wednesday night. Well, pensive USA fans did, and many thanked Pasquantino. A number of Tony Soprano memes were shared, too, and this was fun to see.
