  • Chiefs hire Chad O’Shea as wide receivers coach amid staff shakeup
  • Eric Bieniemy returns as offensive coordinator while Reid reshapes staff
  • Rob Gronkowski praises O’Shea’s receiver coaching and player connection

Contrary to what many fans feared, Chiefs coach Andy Reid won’t be bringing back his entire staff from this season.

The Chiefs finished with a 6-11 record and fans wanted new blood on Reid’s staff. And that’s what is happening.

The biggest splash is the return of Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator, but the Chiefs also hired Chad O’Shea as wide receivers coach. O’Shea’s résumé includes time with the Vikings, Patriots, Dolphins, Browns ... and Chiefs.

O’Shea was a volunteer assistant then assistant special teams coach in the early 2000s in Kansas City. His longest stay with one team was in New England (2009-2018) where he was wide receivers coach.

Four-time All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski believes the Chiefs made a slam-dunk hire.

“Chad O’Shea ... I wouldn’t say is responsible for Randy Moss’ and Wes Welker’s career in New England, but I would say he’s responsible for Julian Edelman’s career in New England, that’s for sure,” Gronkowski said Wednesday on the “Up & Adams” show. “But Chad O’Shea, I mean, he was there in the prime of Randy Moss and Wes Welker at the wide receiver position. He was the wide receivers coach, he helped establish that and helped that offense grow. Helped those wide receivers be on the same page as (quarterback) Tom Brady. And he’s got so much knowledge of the game of football. I love Chady O.”

Edelman had three seasons with a thousand receiving yards or more, and twice had 100 or more receptions.

Gronkowski was asked what Chiefs fans can expect from O’Shea, who spent one season as the Dolphins’ offensive coordinator after leaving New England. With the Patriots, O’Shea won a trio of Super Bowl rings.

“He’s a smart guy, very smart,” Gronkowski said. “Knows the game of football, no doubt about it. He was an offensive coordinator before, but I truly believe that he fits at the wide receiver position better than any other coach out there. ... He’s probably a top three wide receiver coach in the NFL.

“I’m telling you his knowledge and the way that he can connect with players as well. It’s not just about coaching and knowing what you know about football and knowing everything inside and out. It’s how you connect with these guys, and how can you bring the best out of them. And that’s what he does, and that’s why he’s so great.”
