Chiefs’ offensive woes in last three games dispel one Patrick Mahomes criticism

Even after the Chiefs cemented their dynasty with a win in Super Bowl LVIII, there were still doubters.

That’s social media for you, right?

Here is the kind of things being said about quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who had led the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl victory in five seasons.

Those criticisms have since followed Mahomes, but we shouldn’t hear anything like that in the future.

During an end-of-the-season call with reporters on Monday, Chiefs coach Andy Reid was asked by The Star’s Sam McDowell about the team’s overall goal to improve this offseason.

Reid mentioned the offense in his response.

“You’re still looking at an offense, it was one of the top 10 offenses in the league, if you take everything into consideration there,” Reid said. “So you’re not that far off. You’ve got to get a couple things bouncing your way and make sure you take care of that.”

The Chiefs’ offense may have been top 10 in some categories over the first 15 weeks of the season, but when Mahomes was injured, everything fell apart.

With Mahomes out, the Chiefs had 33 possessions and scored just 34 points. They had 440 total yards in those three games, scoring just one touchdown and picking up a mere 29 first downs.

The theory/criticism that Mahomes was a system quarterback vanished in those three games. The Chiefs had injuries on the offensive line and receiving corps that affected things, but it was clear what Mahomes brings to the offense.

And it didn’t take long for fans to notice. Here is a bit of what they were saying about the absurdity of saying Mahomes is a system quarterback.
