Broncos seemed to know play calls from Chiefs offense and defense in 4th quarter

The Chiefs can point to multiple things, big and small, that went wrong Sunday in their 22-19 loss to the Broncos in Denver.

But it didn’t help that the Broncos seemed to know at times what play calls the Chiefs had made. It happened on both offense and defense late in the game.

On the Chiefs’ final possession, they had a second-and-10 play from their 26-yard line. Patrick Mahomes’ pass to Travis Kelce was incomplete. Before the snap, the Broncos appeared to recognize what play was coming.

The Chiefs ended up punting with 3 minutes, 10 seconds to play in the game.

Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones talked about the Broncos recognizing their defense scheme ahead of Denver’s pivotal third-and-15 conversion ahead of the two-minute warning.

That 20-yard pass from Bo Nix to Courtland Sutton prolonged the Broncos drive that ended with Wil Lutz’s game-winning field goal.

“Great film study for them, because they called it out,” Jones told reporters after the game. “I heard them calling it out. They actually switched the line. If you watch the film, you can see Bo Nix kind of switch the line.

“So they knew it. We’ve got to do a better job of disguising.”
