As a dad, Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes cherishes one task some fathers may dread
Solitude is likely in short supply for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes works long days at the Chiefs facility, then heads home to his wife and three kids. And even when he gets time off, Mahomes will jet off to see Texas Tech play and sit in with ESPN’s broadcast crew, as he did this past weekend.
But as Carrington Harrison of 96.5 The Fan noted Wednesday during his weekly interview with Mahomes, there is alone time when the quarterback is driving to and from work.
Harrison wanted to know what Mahomes listens to in the car.
“It kind of depends on the mood that I’m in,” Mahomes said. “There’s times where I’m listening to music, and I’m a guy that just goes to my songs and just hits shuffle. I don’t have a ton of like, playlists, except for game day. So I just want to, I just listen to old music, new music, whatever that is. Then there’s times I’ll listen to a podcast, usually, like, comedy style podcasts, just to kind of keep the mood light. And then obviously, there’s times I got to be on the phone..
“Sometimes those car rides are so, like you said, are like, sacred to me. I hate being on the phone. There are sometimes we’ve got to handle some business things like that. And so it’s a mixture of them all.”
Mahomes, who is a father to 4-year-old Sterling, 2-year-old Bronze and 11-month old Golden, said the thing he relishes the most is when his kids are with him in the car.
“But my favorite is when I ride around with my kids and we play I Spy and stuff like that,” Mahomes said. “And so those are the times that I’ll remember the rest of my life.”
Driving the kids is not a task every father loves, but it’s really great to see Mahomes embrace that time with his children.
During the radio interview, Mahomes also shared the off-the-field advice he received from coach Andy Reid. And pat of that involved fatherhood.
“It’s about being the best person you can be every single time you walk out of the building,” Mahomes said. “Football is something that we love and that you want to be the best at it you could possibly be and have so much success. But how can you become a better person, a better man, every single time you step in this building, and when you step out, be a better husband and father for your family?
“And that’s something that he preaches from day one. And something I take to heart is like, I want to be the best quarterback I can possibly be, the guy who goes out there, wins Super Bowls. But same time, want to be a Super Bowl winner as a husband and a Super Bowl winner as a dad.”
