There could be an ejection at Kauffman Stadium next week.

Yep, the baseball season ended with that electric Game 7 win by the Dodgers in the World Series. But there will be a special event at Kauffman Stadium on Nov. 15: Royals broadcaster Denny Matthews’ wedding.

Matthews, whose 83rd birthday is the day before he ties the knot, said the idea for getting married at The K came from his fiancée, Amy Baker.

“She said, ‘Let’s do it at the ballpark, and it will be a ballpark-themed wedding.’ Or if you want to look at it another way, a Royal wedding,” Matthews said. “The heck with England, we got our own Royal wedding.

“She said no tuxes, no fancy dresses, no black tie, just wear what you would wear to the wedding if you were coming to the ballpark to a game. That sounded like fun. And she said instead of a big fancy dinner, we’ll just have ballpark food with a few little extras, not just hot dogs and mustard and all that, just a few little extra things. All the guests are invited to wear their favorite Royals gear. And if you show up in a black tie or a fancy dress, you’re ejected, umpire’s gonna kick you out.”

Baker grew up in Atchison, Kansas, and was a standout softball player, Matthews said, with a tinge of pride.

Matthews, the Voice of the Royals, has long had a special place in Baker’s heart, well before they met for the first time. As a child, Baker found listening to the Royals and Matthews gave her peace when there was strife among the adults in her home.

“When things got tense, she would run out of the house with the radio and run down the street and sit on the curb and listen to the Royals,” Matthews said. “So she said that I was kind of a comforting voice for her, and it kind of got her through a lot of tough situations. And she was a Royals fan, really a good softball player. Loved sports, all sports.”

The couple met more than 15 years ago when Matthews went for dental work and Baker was working in the office.

Their first date was at The K.

“I invited her to come out to a game, and she was excited to do that, and I invited her up to the booth for a couple innings,” Matthews said. “It ended up she sat there the whole game, and then we went downstairs to the Crown Club, and everybody was pretty well gone after the game was over.

“We sat there for about an hour and a half just telling each other our life’s stories, as it turned out.”

Their love has blossomed over the years, and now they’re preparing to wed in the building where they first fell for one another.

Matthews, who has never been married, said the time is right to tie the knot. And he quipped that he’ll never forget his anniversary because it’s the day after his birthday.

The wedding was planned for when the World Series had ended, because an optimist might have expected Kauffman Stadium to be in use.

“We have a lot of things to relate to, the love of sports and both of us having played,” Matthews said. “It’s a nice association, it’s a nice companionship, it’s a great friend. It’s a love, it’s a marriage, it’s a life, and it’s all those things that follow.”
