Disastrous series of plays at the goal line at end of first half doomed Chiefs
There was a wild swing of momentum late in the first half of the Chiefs’ 28-21 loss to the Bills late in the first half of Sunday’s game in Orchard Park, New York.
Bills quarterback Josh Allen’s 1-yard touchdown run with 1 minute, 33 seconds left in the half gave Buffalo a 21-10 lead.
But the Chiefs moved the ball 66 yards in just three plays, capped by Patrick Mahomes’ 40-yard pass to Marquise “Hollywood” Brown. That put the ball on the Bills’ 1-yard line with 20 seconds left in the half.
The Chiefs had the momentum as they were poised to score a touchdown and would get the ball to start the second half.
Instead, the Chiefs failed to gain that longest yard and had to settle for a field goal.
Here’s how the series went.
First down (20 seconds left): A handoff to Kareem Hunt went for no gain.
Second down (15 seconds left): Mahomes threw an incompletion.
Third down (9 seconds left): Mahomes’ pass for Travis Kelce was off the mark
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell reported the NFL’s Next Gen Stats said it was a minus-7.5% Win Probability for the Chiefs by kicking the field goal rather than going for it on fourth down.
There were plenty of twists and turns in the second half and the Chiefs had the ball while down by seven points in the fourth quarter. And they got the ball back with 22 seconds left in regulation, trailing by seven, but couldn’t complete the comeback.
But the Chiefs could have been down by three points had they been able to get the ball in the end zone at the end of the first half.
