For Pete's Sake

Chiefs fan who caught a Patrick Mahomes pass in Sunday’s game got sweet keepsake

As Chiefs fans seethe about the Pro Football Focus ratings for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, I have one question.

Does it hurt Mahomes’ rating if he completes a pass to a Chiefs fan during a game?

That happened Sunday in the Chiefs’ 31-0 rout of the Las Vegas Raiders at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. On a first-and-goal play with less than 10 minutes to left before halftime, Mahomes threw a pass out of the end zone to avoid a sack.

Mahomes’ throw was caught by Jeremy Bredemeier of Overland Park.

“As soon as the ball came off Mahomes’ fingertip, I could stare at the indention of the tip of the ball the whole way into my hands, that’s how tight the spiral was,” Bredemeier wrote in a message to The Star. “The easiest ball I’ve caught in my life.“

Bredemeier didn’t get to keep the ball, because it has a chip in it, as CBS Sports’ Tony Romo explained. The chip is used for first-down measurements.

That wasn’t a surprise to Bredemeier, whose family has had season tickets for 32 years.

That wasn’t just any ball that Bredemeier received for giving up the one he caught. It was autographed by coach Andy Reid, kicker Harrison Butker, punter Matt Araiza and long snapper James Winchester.

That’s a pretty sweet keepsake.

“I’ve caught a kicking ball in the past, which I got to keep the actual ball as it was before the introduction of the chips in the balls, I assume,” Bredemeier wrote. “My dad has also caught a ball from (former Broncos quarterback John) Elway back in the day, which he also got to keep.”

Catching a pass from Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl MVP, was a thrill for Bredemeier. And if the passes from Mahomes have that kind of spiral, Bredemeier is ready to join Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and the other Chiefs receivers.

“If he ever needs a new set of hands,” Bredemeier said of Mahomes, “I think I’ve got some years in me.”
