The Royals could use a strong weekend showing to move up in the American League Wild Card race. The Chiefs hope to win Sunday to avoid starting the season with an 0-2 record.

In a fun twist, both Kansas City sports franchises will be playing Philadelphia teams.

The Royals open a three-game series against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, and Philadelphia has just about wrapped up the National League East crown. But the Phillies are in the running for the best record in baseball, so they’ll be plenty motivated this weekend.

The Royals need to string together some wins just to get back into the playoff race. They are five games out of an American League Wild Card spot with 15 games to play. Two teams are ahead of them in the standings.

Sunday’s Royals-Phillies game will start at 12:35 p.m. (on FanDuel Sports Kansas City), and should end before the Chiefs play host to the Eagles at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff is at 3:25 p.m. and the game is on Fox 4.

The Chiefs haven’t opened a season with an 0-2 record since 2014.

Kurtis Seaboldt of WHB radio (810 AM), noted this will be the ninth time the Royals and Chiefs will play a foe from the same city on the same day.

Kansas City teams have a cumulative 12-4 record in those past meetings and swept both games on four occasions.
