For Pete's Sake

Only 1 MLB player since 1901 has matched home-run feat of Royals’ Mike Yastrzemski

Royals right fielders have hit 10 home runs this season, and if that seems like a modest amount, you’re right.

That ranks 26th in Major League Baseball.

But considering how little production the Royals got out of the right-field spot in the first two months of the season, 10 home runs is a decent number.

The addition of Mike Yastrzemski has certainly helped.

In the Royals’ 4-3 win Monday night over the Texas Rangers, Yastrzemski opened the home half of the first inning with a home run. It was his 3rd leadoff home run in his 15 games with the Royals, who acquired him in a deadline-day trade with the San Francisco Giants.

That puts Yastrzemski in rarified air.

Opta Stats noted Yastrzemski is just the second player since 1901 to hit three leadoff home runs in his first 15 games with a team. The other is Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson, who hit three in his first seven games with the Mariners following a trade from the New York Mets in May 2000.

Henderson, who died last December, was 41 years old at the time
