Patrick Mahomes on debate over Chiefs stadium: ‘Arrowhead is a special place’

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will turn 30 in September, and he’s previously said he has no intention of playing into his mid-40s.

But it’s likely Mahomes will be playing should a new domed stadium open for the Chiefs in Kansas — if the team decides to move over the state line. That’s just one option for the Chiefs. Renovating GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium remains a strong possibility, too.

That has created a stadium Border War for the Chiefs (and Royals), and Mahomes was asked in which state he’d rather play during a CNBC interview.

“You know, it is really out of my control, honestly. But I think there’s a — Arrowhead is a special place,” Mahomes told CNBC’s Alex Sherman. “It’s a special place that doesn’t come around a lot of times. It’s my favorite place to play in the NFL, not just because it’s my team, but you can feel the history of it when you play.”

Mahomes has done plenty of interviews in his career so he’s savvy enough to not take just one side in the stadium debate. And he mentioned that Kansas would be good to the Chiefs, too.

And Mahomes gave a tip of the cap to Chiefs fans.

“But I know Kansas has done a great bit as well,” Mahomes continued. “And I mean, they would build us a great stadium and facility and be the top of the top. And so I don’t really have a choice in the matter anyways. But I think either way we can’t go wrong because we have the fan base of the Chiefs Kingdom behind us, and they’ll fill that stadium, no matter if it’s in Missouri or Kansas. So I’m just excited for the future of the Kansas City Chiefs.”
