Indiana Fever star says KC is better fit for WNBA team than new expansion cities

In preparation for the Big 12 Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament being played in Kansas City, crews were busy sprucing up the exterior of the T-Mobile Center Tuesday morning. Anna Chirinos Marin polished the pink signage in front of the arena on Grand Boulevard. Workers from SECT and Loud Productions set up outdoor basketball courts and rigging for other activities that will be open throughout the tournament in front of arena. Action gets underway Wednesday night when Kansas State takes on West Virginia.

Former Mizzou standout Sophie Cunningham went viral last month for exacting a bit of revenge during a game after Connecticut Sun players hit Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark.

Cunningham, who is Clark’s teammate on the Fever, took down Connecticut’s Jacy Sheldon late in the game, and video of the moment went viral on social media.

Another viral video of Cunningham was being widely shared Tuesday as she talked about the WNBA planning to add expansion teams in Philadelphia, Detroit and Cleveland. Women’s basketball franchises in those latter two cities have already failed, and Cunningham mentioned other places she’d like to see in the WNBA.

That included Kansas City, which has expressed interest in having a WNBA team play at T-Mobile Center. The reason for the video being widely shared is Cunningham spoke about how she wasn’t thrilled to play in Detroit or Cleveland.

“There’s more opportunities, and so I get that aspect, but I also think you want to listen to your players, too,” Cunningham said. “Where do they want to play? Where are they going to get excited to play and draw fans? And I do think that Miami would have been a great one, like everyone loves Florida. Nashville is an amazing city. Kansas City, amazing opportunity. There’s a huge arena downtown that no one’s using, and I think that the women’s soccer league is showing that people draw, you know? ...

“It’s a hard situation, but man, I don’t know how excited people are to be going to Detroit or (Cleveland).”

Cunningham’s soccer comment was clearly about the Kansas City Current, who have their own stadium.
