MLB legend Reggie Jackson on why he was eager to meet Patrick Mahomes at Royals game
In one sense, Royals legend George Brett is living out a biblical teaching: “Love your enemies.”
During his playing days, Brett absolutely hated the Yankees, largely because the teams met in the playoffs four times. Near the top of the list of Brett’s least-favorite Yankees was fellow Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson.
But these days the two are such close friends that they were seen clowning around Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium during the Royals-Yankees game.
On Wednesday, Jackson stopped by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, and talked with reporters about Brett.
“George and I hated each other when we played against each other,” Jackson said. “But we got to know each other at the Hall of Fame. And it’s always been special ever since. He’s got a son named Jackson, not named after me, but he’s got a wonderful family. I know his family, and I can honestly say that I know George, and the friendship is special to me. I’m a fan of George Brett. He was a great, great player.”
Brett was just one person that Jackson wanted to see at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday. Once he learned Patrick Mahomes was at the game, Jackson sought out the Chiefs quarterback.
Royals CEO/chairman John Sherman pointed out where Mahomes was sitting in the stands so Jackson, a five-time World Series winner, got a selfie with the three-time Super Bowl MVP.
Jackson admires Mahomes for more than his insane athletic ability.
“I said, I want to go down and see him, say hello,” Jackson said. “You know the great player, great person, great leader and I like what he represents. He represents unity. You know, not important what community he’s from, Black or white, and he’s both. And I’m just very proud of how he goes about his stature and how he has a wonderful image, and what he does for the community here. And so worthy of a handshake and worthy of a pat on the back, saying, ‘Thanks a lot for what you do.’”
