Royals will get new City Connect uniforms. We came up with three design concepts

A wave of new City Connect uniforms have been rolled out by Major League Baseball teams this season, and the original plan called for the Royals to get an updated look, too.

The agreement between Nike and MLB calls for teams to use City Connect uniforms for three years, but the Royals asked for a waiver. So they’re wearing their fountain-themed City Connect uniforms for a fourth and final season.

Although a new City Connect uniform won’t be unveiled until next season, the Royals have been looking at designs and working on the new threads.

Here is what MLB has said about the alternate uniforms: “The City Connect initiative consists of alternate uniforms created by Nike for Major League Baseball that showcase unique color schemes, typefaces and graphic elements distinct from the traditional home and away digs, designed to celebrate the cultural heritage of each team’s home city.”

With that in mind, The Star’s Neil Nakahodo took some of my ideas and came up with designs for three City Connect concepts for the Royals.

How bout those Chiefs?

The White Sox chose a Chicago Bulls theme for their City Connect 2.0 jerseys, and it would be a no-brainer for the Royals to do the same with their Truman Sports Complex neighbors.

Exchanging their blue uniforms for red, we liked the idea of using the KC in the Chiefs helmet on a baseball cap. There is an arrowhead on the sleeve, too.

Kansas City Current

We mixed a bit of green in the traditional Royals blue and — voila — you’ve got the Kansas City Current’s teal for a baseball jersey.

Unlike the full-uniform powder blues the Royals will sometimes wear, this jersey would look better with white pants. The sleeve has a Royals crown with the Current logo inside, and the cap doesn’t include an interlocking KC.

KC Monarchs

The Royals in pinstripes? It’s something different and a nod to the Negro Leagues. The Monarchs were known to wear pinstripes some seasons and this would be a unique look.

On their sleeve, the Royals would wear KC heart logo, just as the Monarchs once did. The lettering and numbers would have an old-time feel, too.
