Netflix series showed characters bonding over their hatred of the Chiefs
The debate is likely to continue well into the 2025 season, but if you want to crown the Chiefs as America’s Team, then crown ‘em.
Cowboys fans take umbrage at such claims, but there’s little doubt that the Chiefs games generate monster television numbers. And one reason for that is because fans of other teams loathe the Chiefs.
In this completely unscientific vote from Instagram, the Chiefs were voted the most hated team in the NFL, beating out the Cowboys.
The disdain for the Chiefs has crossed over into the entertainment world, where it was featured in the Netflix series “Sirens.”
Here’s a bit of what the New York Times wrote about the show: “Meghann stars as the down-and-out Devon, who dresses in black, smokes cigarettes, has casual sexual encounters and tries to care for her ailing father with dementia in Buffalo.”
It’s that last part that brings this story back to hatred for the Chiefs.
A clip shows an exasperated Devon asking for a moment of grace from another character as she’s looking to smoke. The man notices she has a Buffalo Bills lighter in her hand.
“You a Bills fan?” he asks.
“Yeah, go Bills. Why? You?” Devon responds.
The man shakes his head and says: “Dolphin fan.”
There’s a moment between them when they realize they’re not on the same page ... until the man asks: “(Screw) the Chiefs?”
“Oh,” Devon says, “the Chiefs can get (beat). (Screw) the Chiefs.”
The man then tells Devon: “OK, we have a spot. Follow me.”
Yep, hatred for the Chiefs is so well-established that you’ll see it referenced in a Netflix comedy.
Unfortunately, there is quite a bit of cursing in that short clip, so I linked to it. You can see it here.
