Chiefs could have double-digit national TV games on schedule, NFL executive says
The NFL schedule makers absolutely love the Chiefs’ list of opponents for the 2025 season.
The Chiefs will play 10 of their 17 games against teams that were in the playoffs a year ago. That includes seven at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
While on the It’s Always Gameday in Buffalo podcast last month, NFL VP of broadcast planning and scheduling Mike North said the league’s broadcast partners will air a lot of great Chiefs games.
“The Chiefs have a spectacular schedule,” North said. “I mean, honestly, you could almost just read down the Chiefs schedule. They play Detroit, they play Washington, they play Baltimore again. Those are all going to be fun. That sounds like a difficult schedule.”
The NFL’s broadcast partners love the Chiefs, and North admitted Kansas City has been used to help get fans accustomed to seeing games on new streaming platforms.
It’s why the Chiefs are likely to open the 2025 season against the Chargers in Brazil.
That could be one of as many as 10 national TV games for the Chiefs this season. We’ll know how many for sure when the NFL releases the schedule on Wednesday.
That was revealed when North was asked about teams playing multiple nationally televised games in a short stretch of their schedule.
“For teams like Buffalo, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Green Bay, Dallas, Pittsburgh, you’re talking about probably six, seven, eight, nine, 10 nationally televised games, when you factor in some of these other windows and the (Sunday) doubleheaders,” North said. “They’ve got to go somewhere.
“They might mass up a bunch kind of in a row somewhere.”
NBC Sports noted that since the start of 2020, the Chiefs have played 26 prime-time games. That’s the most in the NFL.
Playing in the Super Bowl five times in six seasons and lifting the Lombardi Trophy three times makes the Chiefs the biggest draw in the NFL.
And two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes is the face of the league.
“When a team gets good and has an MVP quarterback and is the kind of must-see television that our network partners hope for, expect, request, you can’t really get into a routine (playing at the same time each week),” North said. “So you do end up seeing the same teams kind of over and over again in prime time.”
