For Pete's Sake

New Pope Robert Prevost is from Chicago — and he’s a fan of Windy City sports

Heck, for a while on Thursday it seemed the Royals might have caught a break.

Shortly before their game against the White Sox at Kauffman Stadium, Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected the first American pope in the history of the Catholic Church.

Prevost, who was born in Chicago, will be known as Pope Leo XIV.

With the new Pope being from the Windy City, fans wanted to know (among other things) if he is a supporter of the Cubs or White Sox. According to ABC News, the new Pope is a Cubs fan.

If you believe in divine intervention in sports, then perhaps the Royals were fortunate to learn initially the new Pope doesn’t cheer for the White Sox.

At first, sports fans in Chicago and elsewhere were tickled to learn that the Pope is a Cubs fan. However, WMAQ-TV contacted John Prevost, the Pope’s brother, who said reports of the Cubs fandom were greatly exaggerated.

“Contrary to the earlier reports, Prevost said that his brother is actually a White Sox fan,” the WMAQ story notes, “with his parents having split loyalty between the Cubs and Cardinals.”

“Whoever said Cubs on the radio got it wrong. It’s Sox,” Prevost told WMAQ.

The White Sox relished that news.

Is the Pope’s fandom limited to baseball? Maybe he likes the Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks, too.

Here is a bit of what sports fans were saying about Pope Leo XIV.
