K-State catcher gets an out on freak foul ball after pitch nearly hits batter in head

Self preservation resulted in an out for a Wichita State baseball player on Tuesday night.

Shockers outfielder Davis Mauzy was at the plate in the fourth inning when something unusual happened at Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kansas. Mauzy ducked because a pitch from Kansas State’s Tanner Duke was near his head.

That was the self-preservation part of the story.

Unfortunately for Mauzy, the ball hit his bat and popped in to the air.

Even worse for Mauzy: Kansas State catcher Cayden Phillips then made an incredible defensive play. Phillips quickly jumped out from behind the plate and caught the ball.

Instead of a 1-0 count for Mauzy, he was out on a really impressive play and that ended the inning.

The Wildcats defeated the Shockers 14-8 and this was the play of the game. Here is the catch from Kansas State’s X account.
