For Pete's Sake

Royals’ victory Sunday included a MLB oddity that last happened in 2012

There was good news and bad news for the Royals on Sunday.

On a positive note, they snapped a six-game losing streak with their 4-3 win over the Tigers in Detroit.

But the Royals’ offense continues to be stuck in neutral. They haven’t scored more than two runs in a single inning since a five-run frame against the Orioles on April 4.

The Royals have hit the fewest home runs in baseball this season (11) and have the lowest slugging percentage (.305). They’re also tied for the fewest runs scored (67) this season.

In Sunday’s win, the Royals were outhit by the Tigers (10 to 9) and there was one interesting quirk to all those hits. None went for extra bases.

MLB researcher/stats guru Sarah Langs noted that’s the most combined hits in a game with none of them going for extra bases since Sept. 4, 2012. On that day, the Cardinals defeated the Mets 5-1 and those teams also combined for 19 singles.

That Cardinals team advanced to the National League Championship Series in that season, so perhaps that’s a good sign for the Royals.
