Kansas City expected to shatter USA Rugby attendance record for women’s match
This should help Kansas City’s case for being a host city for the men’s Rugby World Cup in 2031 and the women’s Rugby World Cup two years later.
The USA women’s rugby team is coming to Kansas City and will play host to Canada at CPKC Stadium on May 2. Ticket sales show the match is expected to shatter the previous attendance record for a women’s rugby match.
USA Rugby said the record is “just over 2,000 attendees” during a 2021 match against Canada at Infinty Park in Glendale, Colorado. But more than 7,500 tickets have been sold for the match at CPKC Stadium.
“We couldn’t be more delighted to see interest in women’s rugby reach new heights in Kansas City,” USA Rugby CEO Bill Goren said in a news release. “With the Women’s Eagles starting their journey to the Rugby World Cup, we’re thrilled for Kansas City sports fans to be part of the experience and this momentous occasion.”
Ilona Maher, who helped the U.S. women’s team win a Bronze medal in Rugby 7s at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, will be playing in the match in Kansas City.
“Kansas City is overjoyed to be hosting this record-breaking event at CPKC Stadium, where our community continually celebrates and uplifts female athletes,” Kansas City Sports Commission and Visit KC president & CEO Kathy Nelson said in a news release. “We look forward to bringing rugby fans together in the Heart of America for this unforgettable matchup when we welcome the U.S. and Canadian teams to Kansas City.”
