The Royals on Monday will open a three-game series against the Yankees, and one can’t help but think about the last time the teams met in New York.

The Royals beat the Yankees 4-2 in Game 2 of the American League Division Series, but that was merely good fortune for KC. Or so said Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm.

“We still don’t feel like any team is better than us,” Chisholm told reporters after the game. “Like you said, we had a lot of missed opportunities tonight, so they just got lucky.”

It was an ironic thing to say because Chisholm benefited from a bad umpiring call that allowed him to score the winning run in Game 1 of the ALDS.

The Royals and their fans didn’t take kindly to Chisholm’s words after Game 2. When the series shifted west, Royals fans booed Chisholm over the two games at Kauffman Stadium.

In Game 4, the Royals’ Maikel Garcia got into it with Yankees players after an out at second base. Each team’s bench and bullpen emptied but it was much ado about nothing.

However, Chisholm pinned the blame squarely on Garcia, who had drawn the ire of Yankees fans for his comments about New York in the series.

“I just felt like he tried to go and injure (Anthony) Volpe because he was being a sore loser,” Chisholm told MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch that night. “He was talking a lot on Instagram and Twitter and stuff. I do the same thing, but I’m not gonna go and try and injure somebody if they’re winning a game. And I didn’t like that, so I told him we don’t do that on this side and I’m always gonna stick up for my guys.”

Chisholm has a .169 average this season but he has five home runs, four stolen bases, nine runs scored an 10 RBIs. He hit a home run Sunday, but is batting just .106 since calling some MLB fans “idiots” earlier this year.
