Bills player says his team would have had better Super Bowl showing than the Chiefs
During his eight seasons with the Bills, offensive tackle Dion Dawkins has played in the postseason seven times.
Four times, his season has been ended by the Chiefs, including twice in the AFC Championship Game along with the greatest playoff game in NFL history (the Chiefs’ 42-36 overtime win in a 2021 AFC Divisional game).
Dawkins was on The Pivot podcast this week and was asked if he hates the Chiefs. He said no, but host Ryan Clark asked if he wasn’t at least a little bugged by quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ new hairstyle.
“I ain’t even know what he looks like,” Dawkins quipped.
Dawkins was asked how he felt after the Chiefs defeated the Bills 32-29 in the AFC Championship Game in January.
“The immediate feeling was: It’s over. What can we do? We lost. Time to go home,” Dawkins said of losing to the Chiefs. “And now with the time, it’s like we would have put on a better show in the Super Bowl. We would have put on a better show. And I am a part of my team, so I think my team is going to put on the best show regardless of anybody performing. We are the ones. We’re raw. Our quarterback is raw. Our line is raw. D-line is raw. We are the raws. We put on the best show and we perform at a high level. And I think now looking at it ... when it happened, I was like, ‘Been here before, 13 seconds, this sucks.’ We lost again and one game away, boo hoo, but it’s over with.
“I walked off of the field, I gave (Chiefs star) Chris Jones a hug. I said, ‘Good luck, bro. Go and get another one.’ And it was over with. I closed that door immediately. My mind was immediately off from that. When we got on the bus, I ain’t complained about nothing. I didn’t say we should have did this. It was over with. I was already done. I said, ‘Cool, I’m going home. I’m going back to Buffalo. The season’s over. I don’t got to get up and go to practice or work out in the morning. It’s over with.’”
It sounds like Dawkins was at the Superdome in New Orleans, because he lamented what he saw from the Chiefs in their 40-22 loss to the Eagles.
There is no question in Dawkins’ mind that the Bills would have played better than the Chiefs on that day and he reiterated that point.
“And now, after going to the Super Bowl and seeing it and feeling those emotions, you know, I’m like, this is us. Like, we would have did this,” Dawkins said. “Not to say that we would (have) just went in there and just beat the Eagles. ... We would have had a chance. And we would have had a better chance in my eyes.”
