Left tackle projected to be drafted by Chiefs already has nickname for Patrick Mahomes
It’s no secret the Chiefs are looking for a left tackle ahead of the 2025 season, and a new mock draft has them finding their man.
Oregon’s Josh Conerly Jr., who was a first-team All-Big Ten left tackle, is projected by Pro Football Focus to be chosen by the Chiefs with the 31st overall pick in this year’s draft.
“I firmly believe the Chiefs will draft the top offensive tackle on their board, whether that be here at No. 31 or a few picks ahead via a small trade-up,” PFF’s Trevor Sikkema wrote in a mock draft released Monday. “With them bringing back Trey Smith on the franchise tag, they should want to reestablish the interior core of Smith, Joe Thuney and Creed Humphrey by drafting a promising tackle.”
Conerly, who is 6 foot 4 and 315 pounds, has said he had a formal meeting with the Chiefs at the NFL Combine. And he already has a nickname for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
“That’s the Young Goat right there, you know what I mean?” Conerly said of Mahomes while talking with reporters at the NFL Combine. ”It would mean the world (to play for the Chiefs) and shoot, I’d make the most of the opportunity.”
Conerly wasn’t the only offensive lineman to be asked about the Chiefs and Mahomes at the NFL Draft.
LSU guard Miles Frazier said he had an informal meeting with the Chiefs and is a fan of Mahomes.
“Patrick Mahomes is a dog, obviously,” Frazier told reporters. “He showed the league, he shows everybody like how he is. He’s close to Tom Brady, in my opinion, of just his stature, just his accolades and things like that. But it’d be an honor to block for him.”
LSU offensive tackle Emery Jones Jr., also said it would be an honor to block for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
“It would be an honor (to play for the Chiefs),” Jones told reporters. “Patrick Mahomes is a great quarterback, who I feel like everybody kind of looks up to. You know, he’s kind of the standard of the NFL at the quarterback position. It would be an honor and blessing to block for him. I’ll give them my all.”
While he’s not an offensive lineman, Iowa State wide receiver Jaylin Noel, who played at Park Hill High School, also talked about the Chiefs.
“Jamaal Charles, Dwayne Bowe, obviously, recently, Patrick Mahomes, just to name a few,” Noel told reporters of Chiefs players he has cheered. “It means a lot. Being able to come from that area, like you said, put on for the city, it’s very cool. And to be able to show younger kids and players from that area that it’s possible, as long as you put the work in and be consistent every day. It’s very cool to be able to be a role model for them.”
