Although he’s only 29 years old, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes already owns the second-most fourth-quarter comebacks in NFL playoff history.

Mahomes is tied with Hall of Famer Joe Montana with five such comebacks. Former Patriots/Buccaneers star Tom Brady tops the list with nine.

Here is a closer look at those comebacks, which doesn’t include comebacks before the final quarter (such as the last time the Chiefs faced the Texans in the playoffs).

Super Bowl LIV

The Chiefs trailed 20-10 midway through the fourth quarter but they had time to run Wasp, which started the comeback. Mahomes threw a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner to Damien Williams as the Chiefs won 31-20.

The 13-second game

The Chiefs were down by three points with 13 seconds to play in the 2021 AFC Divisional playoff game against the Bills. Mahomes completed passes to Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce to get the Chiefs in range for a game-tying field goal. Mahomes then drove the Chiefs for a game-winning touchdown in overtime as KC prevailed 42-36.

Super Bowl LVII

The Eagles led by six at the start of the fourth quarter, but Mahomes threw two touchdown passes to give the Chiefs the lead. After Philadelphia tied it, Mahomes drove the Chiefs into range for a game-winning field goal as the they won 38-35.

2023 AFC Divisional

Buffalo took a four-point lead into the fourth quarter, but Mahomes and the Chiefs erased that, capping a 75-yard drive early in the final period with a touchdown that put KC up 27-24. That’s how the game ended.

Super Bowl LVIII

The Chiefs trailed in the fourth quarter and overtime against the 49ers. Mahomes directed a 64-yard drive in 1 minute, 50 seconds that set up a tying field goal. After San Francisco kicked a field goal in overtime, Mahomes drove the Chiefs 75 yards for the winning touchdown and another comeback victory.

Mahomes also has led a game-winning drive that wasn’t a fourth-quarter comeback. It came in the 2022 AFC Championship Game when the Chiefs beat the Bengals 23-20 on a game-winning field goal after Mahomes moved KC into range.

Those six-game winning drives are tied with John Elway for the second-most in NFL history behind Brady’s 14.

The NFL shared this video that showed some of Mahomes’ comeback heroics (you may have to scroll to see it).
