KC meteorologists expecting blast of cold air just in time for Chiefs-Texans playoff game

Who could forget the last time the Chiefs played a postseason game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium?

The Chiefs thumped the Dolphins 26-7 in an AFC Wild Card game on a night in which the wind chill was minus-27.

Fortunately, there won’t be a repeat of those conditions for this Saturday’s AFC Divisional playoff game against the Houston Texans. And the teams caught a break as the forecast shows warmer weather is expected Saturday than on Sunday when the other divisional games will be played.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce would loves wintry conditions for football games.

“I‘m not going to lie, man. I’m an Ohio football guy, baby,” Kelce said Monday on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “I love it when it’s just cold and snowy and you just get all the elements mixed into one. And I’m not going to say that. I’m hoping for that, but I definitely love it because it adds a little bit more to how dramatic the game can be, or at least feel.

“But at the end of the day, I don’t care if it’s raining, snowing, if it’s at arrowhead, somewhere else, in the Walmart parking lot, roll the balls out, and let’s play some football, baby.”

Kelce likely won’t get his wish as snow is not in the forecast at the moment for Saturday’s 3:35 p.m. kickoff. And while it won’t be brutally cold, it’s not expected to be balmy, either.

Game-day forecasts

WDAF-TV meteorologist Joe Lauria wrote this in his blog: “The concern for Saturday though would be the gusty winds in the morning and the breezy conditions in the afternoon. So, wind chills will be a factor for the football game.

“This won’t be a repeat though of what happened last year for the Miami playoff game, although wind chills will be in that 10-15° range, perhaps colder towards the end of the game.”

Lauria sees a chance of flurries on Saturday morning and the Fox 4 forecast is a high of 26 degrees that day with a low of 7 degrees.

The National Weather service is predicting a high of 29 degrees on Saturday with a low of 9 degrees.

KSHB-TV meteorologist Lindsey Anderson is expecting a frigid game.

“Mostly cloudy skies with a small chance of rain/snow overnight Friday into Saturday morning. Temperatures will drop through the afternoon. Prepare for a bitter cold game!” she wrote on the Ch. 41 website.

“Tailgating: 25° Wind Chill: 11°

“Kickoff: 22° Wind Chill: 9°

“Postgame: 18° Wind Chill: 5°

KMBC-TV meteorologist Nick Bender is expecting a cold game, too.

“The first wave of arctic air will arrive on Saturday, just in time for the Chiefs’ game,” Bender wrote on the Ch. 9 website.

“Temperatures will only reach the lower and middle 20s on Saturday, with strong north winds resulting in wind chills in the teens. There is a chance of light rain Friday night changing to light snow during the day on Saturday, but as previously mentioned, there is still too much uncertainty to say how much impact, if any, wintry precipitation will have on the Chiefs’ game.”

KCTV meteorologist Greg Bennett shared his outlook for the game on the Ch. 5 website.

“We are also seeing better confidence in lessening the rain and snow threat to the metro and I-70 between Friday and Sunday and at this time we may not see any precipitation for the game,” Bennett wrote. “However, gusty wind up to 25 mph is still possible and cold air is still expected to push back into the region dropping afternoon high temperatures Saturday to the upper 20s.

“Feel-like temperatures will be in the teens.”
