Five things to know about Chiefs wide receiver Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown
When the Chiefs signed wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown nine months ago, no one expected he would make his first start in December.
But Brown was injured on the Chiefs’ first offensive snap in their first preseason game and spent more than four months on injured reserve. But he’s back at practice and is expected to make his 2024 debut Saturday against the Texans.
Here’s a refresher on Brown for those fans who may not know much about him.
1. Why Hollywood?
This isn’t a nod to LA. In fact, Brown got the nickname during a Kansas State game.
Brown played at Oklahoma and during a 2017 game against the Wildcats, Fox Sports broadcaster Gus Johnson bestowed the nickname. That’s because Johnson didn’t know how to pronounce Brown’s first name.
“He went upfield and I looked down and saw Marquise Brown, where is this kid from? Hollywood, Florida,” Johnson told the Cardinals website. “I didn’t know if it was a fluke or something, this kid was so good. It was Marquise, M-A-R-Q, but I guess I hadn’t checked because he wasn’t on my radar, the coaches hadn’t talked about him, nothing.
“Because I couldn’t be sure if it was Mar-keese or Marcus, I was like, where is he from – Hollywood, I just started calling him Hollywood. OK, Hollywood. Go ahead.”
2. The key
Brown received a key to the city of Hollywood, Florida, on July 4, 2021. while he was playing with the Ravens. Baltimore drafted Brown with the 25th overall pick in the 2019 Draft.
3. Early success
Brown played in 46 games over his first three seasons with the Ravens. He had 195 receptions for 2,361 yards and 21 touchdowns.
He averaged 12.1 yards per reception with Baltimore, which traded him to the Arizona Cardinals during the 2022 NFL Draft.
In 24 games with the Cardinals over two seasons, Brown caught 118 passes for 1,283 yards and seven touchdowns.
4. Lamar Jackson connection
When Brown was drafted by the Ravens, he joined an old rival.
Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and Brown had faced off win ... Pop Warner ball.
This is from a FanSided story: “The story between Lamar Jackson and Hollywood Brown stretches back to the Pop Warner days, where the two players played for different teams in the same local league. Brown went on to attend South Broward High School before attending Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School, while Jackson played football for Boynton Beach High School.”
5. Real estate work
Brown in July co-founded a company called Platinum Pro Capital, according to The Middle Market.
That story said Platinum Pro Capital is “a real estate firm that will specialize in Caribbean and other resort properties” and “will cater to athletes and high-net worth individuals.”
Brown told Middle Market: “I always had that thought process of, ‘Man, like what happens if I get another injury?”
That was before Brown suffered a dislocated clavicle in the Chiefs’ first preseason at Jacksonville.
