Video from Chargers-Bengals game shows Chiefs are now NFL’s biggest villains
Ahead of Super Bowl LVIII, quarterback Patrick Mahomes was asked about the Chiefs becoming villains in the NFL.
“I just like winning. If you win a lot and that causes you to be a villain, then I’m OK with it,” Mahomes said. “At the end of the day, I’m going to enjoy playing the game and winning as much as possible.”
Days later the Chiefs beat the 49ers and won back-to-back Super Bowl championships and their third Lombardi Trophy in five years. Fans of other teams have grown to loathe the Chiefs and the success they’ve had in the Mahomes Era.
If you doubt the Chiefs are reviled by fanbases of other teams, look no further than videos from SoFi Stadium on Sunday. The Chargers were playing host to the Bengals, and the Chiefs’ 30-21 loss to the Bills was being shown during pregame warmups.
When Josh Allen scored a game-clinching touchdown and again when Buffalo wrapped up the victory, those Bengals and Chargers fans were thrilled.
But here’s the thing: that happiness was not limited to Bengals and Chargers fans. Reactions to those videos and other posts about the Chiefs’ loss came from fans of the Giants, Ravens, Broncos, Eagles, 49ers, Dolphins and other teams.
