What the Bills said about ‘statement’ win over Chiefs and possible playoff rematch
When he sacked Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in Sunday’s game at Highmark Stadium, it was a milestone moment for Bills linebacker Von Miller.
That was career sack No. 127.5, one more than his childhood idol: former Chiefs star Derrick Thomas.
“I’m proud of myself, proud of my team, keeping a positive mindset and still come out here and work, man,” Miller told reporters afterward. “And you know, 35 years old, 14 years in the game and I still love it. It never gets old, for sure.”
Here is what Miller and his teammates told reporters about the Bills’ 30-21 victory.
QB Josh Allen
On the importance of a touchdown on the final drive: “Anytime you give the ball back to Pat (Mahomes) and that offense, down six with the game on the line. I’ll tell you what, they’d like their odds in that situation. So wanting to get six or seven to try to make it a two-score game.”
On what the win means: “It means we got to nine wins. I know outside perception, it’s a really big game, and what it means for both fanbases and the league. We’re in week 11. You know, we’re 9-2. Last time I checked nine wins probably doesn’t get you in the playoffs.”
Von Miller
On the victory: “This is a crazy night, amazing night. It’s not the Super Bowl, though, but you know, we’re gonna celebrate this one for sure. And take this momentum into the bye week, and who knows after that? But we’re gonna celebrate this one tonight.”
Was it a statement win?: “Yeah, it’s a statement win. They were undefeated. Like I said, it’s not our Super Bowl. Like, the season is not over. We’re not going to the Super Bowl, anything like that, but we have to celebrate wins like this. It is so hard to win in this league. It’s so hard to have success in this league. ...
“This is a good one. We’re gonna celebrate this one and we’ve got a bye week too, so we might celebrate this one for two days instead of just one. It’ll be a great night in Buffalo, for sure.”
On the Chiefs: “They do a good job of spreading it out so it puts stress on the defense that you just can’t focus on one guy. And they do a great job offensively. They have a really, really well-coached team. All the respect in the world for the Chiefs. It was a hard fought win, and time ran out and we were able to get the dub.”
On a potential playoff rematch: “In some form or fashion, whether it’s at our place or their place, we’re gonna see the Chiefs again. Whether it’s in the division round or the AFC championship, or whatever it may be, we are gonna see the Chiefs again, for sure.”
Coach Sean McDermott
On the victory: “It’s hard to win games, you know that. And to win nine, and to win against a team that’s won back-to-back Super Bowls and coached by Andy Reid and quarterbacked by Patrick Mahomes, it’s always going to be tough. These games that we’ve played have always been close, and so I just thought it was very high-level competition out there, and hopefully the fans enjoyed it and enjoyed it on TV as well.”
On going for the touchdown in fourth quarter: “Just felt like we’ve seen too many games as you guys know where Andy and Patrick have come back and you kick a field goal and they go score a touchdown, or it’s overtime, just in different games where they’ve been and they get the ball first and the game’s over. So they’re just way too good to not go for it right there.”
Offensive lineman Dion Dawkins
On the victory: “It’s just a win. It feels good to win, especially against a great team. Anytime that we play the Chiefs, we know what type of time it’s going to be. And to get a win is beautiful. But I’ll say, it’s not the Super Bowl. It’s not the Super Bowl. We’ve still got to do it again, most likely. The respect is there and the respect is high.”
Bills safety Taylor Rapp
On keeping Travis Kelce to 8 receiving yards: “Just sticking to our plan. We had a good plan throughout the week coming into this game, and, you know, really just sticking to it.”
