Travis Kelce shares special message he wrote on signed jersey for Leo Chenal
Linebacker Leo Chenal received a game ball Sunday and the promise of a cheeseburger from coach Andy Reid following the Chiefs’ 16-14 win over the Broncos.
There was one other reward Chenal received for blocking a potential game-winning field goal to secure victory for the Chiefs.
The Athletic’s Nate Taylor noted that tight end Travis Kelce signed his jersey and gave it to Chenal, who had been wanting the keepsake since his rookie season. That tidbit went viral on social media.
During the latest episode of the New Heights podcast, Kelce shared the special message he wrote to Chenal. And Kelce made a mea culpa.
“He earned it by just being a good teammate,” Kelce said. “And this is actually my fault. Of course, it’s my fault. His rookie year, he came up to me and asked me for it, and I was like, ‘Dude, yeah, no problem, I’ll write this thing out to you and in a heartbeat.’ And sure enough, I forget to do it that day, and two years later, I’m sitting here, he comes up to me and calls me out. He’s like, ‘You still owe me a jersey.’ I’m like, ‘Today’s the day you’re getting it.’”
Kelce then shared what he wrote on the jersey.
“So he’s got not only the game-winning blocked kick jersey, I put the date on it,” Kelce said. “I told him how much I appreciate him being a teammate and a Super Bowl champion with me.”
Kelce also noted that he had tied Tony Gonzalez for the most touchdown receptions in Chiefs history in Sunday’s victory.
“I tied him on that day, so I made sure to write that down there on the jersey for him,” Kelce said. ”When I told that to him, he was sitting there like, ‘What? No, no, I can’t (take the jersey).’”
But Kelce was adamant: “Like, it’s in good hands. It’s yours, brother.”
Jason Kelce, the podcast co-host and Travis’ brother, said of the signed jersey: “Oh, that’s awesome.”
