It became evident early in Patrick Mahomes’ career that he’d one day become the Chiefs’ all-time leader in passing yards.

That day came Thursday when the Chiefs took on the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL Kickoff Game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Mahomes surpassed Len Dawson’s 28,507 career passing yards on a play in the first half.

Former Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, who was traded so Mahomes could take over as QB1, shared a special message after the milestone was reached.

“Patrick, you’re now the all-time franchise passing leader for the Kansas City Chiefs,” Smith said in a video posted by the Chiefs on their social media channels. “I only got one question for you: What took you so long? In all seriousness, what you’ve done for this team, this city and everyone whose ever worn a Chiefs jersey is nothing short of incredible. You make us all proud both on and off the field.

“From the very beginning, we all knew you were going to take this franchise to new heights, and that’s exactly what you’ve done. Keep doing what you’re doing, man. I’m so proud and beyond happy for everything you’ve accomplished. Congrats and here’s to many more records.“

This was a classy message from Smith.
