Chiefs’ Rashee Rice likely won’t be suspended for start of season, NFL says
A trial date for a lawsuit filed against Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice for his role in a March car crash in Dallas has been set for next year.
WFAA-TV reported the civil suit filed by Edvard Potrovskiy and Irina Gromova will be decided in a jury trial starting on June 23, 2025. Potrovskiy and Gromova, who were driving a Lexus SUV, filed for damages of at least $10 million against Rice and another driver, Teddy Knox.
Rice was driving a leased Lamborghini Urus that police said reached a top speed of 119 mph before the crash. Rice and Knox, who was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, crashed into the median, starting chain reaction of vehicles. The suit said it “caused (the SUV) to rotate into the middle of the road at a high speed and eventually crash to a standstill.”
Dallas Police filed eight charges against Rice and Knox for their involvement in the crash.
A court date for those charges hasn’t been announced, and that will allow Rice to avoid a suspension to start the 2024 Chiefs season.
Brian McCarthy, the NFL’s vice president of communications, was asked in a conference call if Rice might go on commissioner’s exempt list before the Chiefs’ season opener. That would keep Rice out of action.
“We don’t anticipate that he would be placed on commissioner exempt (list) unless there’s a material change in the case,” McCarthy said.
Jeff Miller, NFL executive vice president of communications, public affairs and policy, said the league was keeping an eye on Rice’s case.
“We’re closely monitoring the developments in the matter,” Miller said in the conference call. “It remains under review. Certainly the police aspect of this is one that we’re going to follow as we do, and while that’s under review and investigation, there’s probably not a lot more to say than that.”
The Chiefs open the 2024 season on Sept. 5 against the Baltimore Ravens at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
