The Arizona Cardinals appeared to make a bit of history as they announced Monday the hiring of a female assistant coach for the next few months.

The team announced on its web site Monday that head coach Bruce Arians has hired Jen Welter as a training camp/preseason intern coaching inside linebackers.

“Coaching is nothing more than teaching,” Arians said on the Cardinals web site. “One thing I have learned from players is, ‘How are you going to make me better? If you can make me better, I don’t care if you’re the Green Hornet, man, I’ll listen.’ I really believe she’ll have a great opportunity with this internship through training camp to open some doors for her.”

The Cardinals said Welter is a former college rugby player who was with the Texas Revolution in the Indoor Football League.

It is believed that Welter is the first woman to be hired as an NFL coach.
