Ex-Raiders coach Jon Gruden, decked out in red, visited KC Chiefs camp Sunday
Thirty years ago, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was with the Green Bay Packers and worked alongside Jon Gruden, who would later serve two stints as the Raiders coach.
A friendship, which was formed when Reid and Gruden were assistants under Mike Holmgren from 1993-95, has endured.
“We were both young and we were able to learn a ton from a great head coach,” Reid told reporters in 2018 about their time with the Packers. “Jon and I spent a lot of time together, along with Steve Mariucci. We were the youngest guys on the staff. We all kind of bonded and did our thing. We did a lot of the gopher work, which we loved. Great learning experience and great foundation to build on.
“We had a blast with that stuff — who could find what or design what. We had a blast with that. He’s a creative mind, so you’ve got to stay on your A-game when you are hanging with him.”
Gruden, who is known best for his time with the silver-and-black, ditched those colors on Sunday and was seen in St. Joseph, Missouri, wearing Chiefs red. That’s because Gruden was at training camp where he watched the Raiders’ former rivals prepare to go for a third straight Super Bowl title.
Hey, who knows? Maybe Gruden suggested some plays for Reid to run with the Chiefs.
