Some KU fans bash Kevin McCullar on social media, but teammates come to his defense
The Kansas Jayhawks’ hopes of winning another national championship took a hit Tuesday night when coach Bill Self said guard Kevin McCullar wouldn’t play in the NCAA Tournament.
McCullar, who has been dealing with a bone bruise in his left knee, told Self the pain is still too great to play. Self said McCullar won’t play at all in the Big Dance, even if KU advances to the Sweet 16.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), McCullar addressed KU fans.
“In regard to me not playing in March Madness, if I could play, I would,” McCullar wrote. “I am more devastated than anyone, knowing that I can’t play and compete alongside my team and that my college career has now come to an end.”
Jayhawks fans shared their opinions of McCullar on X. Some were supportive, many more were critical of him. Here is a small sample of what was being said.
As some KU fans vented on X about the Jayhawks being without McCullar in the NCAA Tournament, his teammates came to his defense.
Hunter Dickinson, who has been dealing with his own injury, shared McCullar’s message and wrote: “The ones in the locker room know all the work you put in behind the scenes to try to play for us for the last couple months. Love you my brother”
Dajuan Harris also shared McCullar’s post and simply wrote: “My boy” with a 100 emoji.
