Patrick, Brittany Mahomes lead Current’s first ‘KC Baby’ chant at CPKC Stadium
The Kansas City Current-Portland Thorns game was broadcast Saturday on ABC, but the opening of CPKC Stadium wasn’t just big news in the United States.
News outlets in France and England have written about CPKC Stadium, the first built specifically for a professional women’s sports team.
A huge teal-colored crowd was in a festive mood at the stadium before kickoff, and that included co-owners Patrick and Brittany Mahomes. The couple passed the ball around on the field and then helped kick off the game.
Current games start with a “KC Baby” chant, and the Mahomeses were given that honor. Brittany Mahomes thanked the Current fans for coming out and making some noise.
“Kansas City! We’re here, we did it,” Brittany Mahomes said. “I just want to say thank you guys for showing up today. This is history, this is incredible and for you guys to show up for these women in their own stadium is amazing.”
Then Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs quarterback, raised the volume in the stadium as he led the chant. Mahomes punctuated it with a boisterous: “Let’s goooo!”
Vanessa DiBernardo scored the first goal and the crowd was even more hyped. The Current took a 3-0 lead in an eventful first half. Portland trimmed the deficit to 3-1 by halftime.
The Current led by as many as four goals before surviving a late Portland charge to win 5-4.
