NFL Films video shows Patrick Mahomes’ surprise at 49ers taking the ball in OT
Following the Chiefs’ crazy comeback win over the Bills two years ago in an AFC Divisional playoff game, much was made about Buffalo’s kickoff decision with 13 seconds left in regulation.
Had the Bills squibbed the kick, it could have affected the Chiefs’ ability to move into range for a game-tying field goal. Instead Buffalo’s deep kick didn’t take any time off the clock, and after two passes the Chiefs were able to tie the game.
Small details like that can make all the difference, and we saw that again Sunday in Super Bowl LVIII. After the Chiefs kicked a field goal to tie the game at the end of regulation, they were prepared to kick off to start overtime if they won the toss.
Instead, the 49ers won the toss ... and took the ball.
NFL Films’ mic’d-up video from the Chiefs’ 25-22 Super Bowl win showed that quarterback Patrick Mahomes was stunned by the 49ers’ decision.
“There aren’t many things that can happen on a football field that catch Patrick Mahomes by surprise,” the narrator noted. “But this? This surprised him.”
His face told the story.
“Inside The NFL” shared a longer clip that showed the Chiefs talking about how they didn’t want the ball to start overtime and the 49ers’ decision.
There are two quotes of note from that clip.
“We want them to have the ball,” Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce said. “They want it, they can have it.”
San Francisco’s Kyle Juszczyk said: “Hey, even if we score a TD, they still get the ball. I didn’t know that.”
