Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes appeared Tuesday on “The Pat McAfee Show,” and he nearly gave viewers a big surprise.

Mahomes said he almost changed his hairstyle before appearing on the ESPN show. That mohawk has inspired a number of people to go with the same look, but Mahomes said he wants to make a change.

“It’s gone this offseason I promise y’all,” Mahomes said. “I almost did it today and just came on today with it. I’ve got to do something.”

McAfee was not happy to hear that news.

“I’ve got a 3 year old at home,” Mahomes said of his daughter, Sterling, whose third birthday is next week. “I can’t just keep the mohawk going. At least change it up a little bit.”

McAfee asked why Mahomes would change his hairstyle after winning two straight Super Bowl championships. Isn’t he worried about a jinx?

“I know,” Mahomes acknowledged. “That’s the only reason I didn’t do it last year, and I’m in the same predicament, man.”

A star-powered Super Bowl

The spectacle of Patrick Mahomes, Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce and more made the 2024 championship the most-watched Super Bowl ever.

Mahomes’ barber, DeJuan Bonds, also told The Star’s Jenna Thompson a new look was coming. And Mahomes mentioned it on the Netflix docuseries “Quarterback,” which was shot during the 2022 season.

“This is my last year with the hair. The hair is gone next year,” Mahomes told his personal trainer, Bobby Stroupe, in the show. “I’m going with a different hairstyle (than) this year. ... I almost did it this year but Head and Shoulders would have been mad. I can’t have two kids with a mohawk.”

Mahomes has appeared in multiple Head and Shoulders commercials through the years.

Stroupe asked why Mahomes wanted to make a change.

“Cause I gotta be a dad at some point, know what I mean?” Mahomes said. “Imagine being 40 years old with this haircut. I mean, come on.”
