Linebacker Drue Tranquill was selected by the Chargers in the 2019 NFL Draft, and he played his first four seasons in Los Angeles.

The Chargers made just one playoff appearance in that time, and Tranquill had a 1-4 record against the Chiefs. When he became a free agent after the 2022 season, Tranquill said the Chargers didn’t want to sign him but the Chiefs swooped in.

“I was a little surprised the Chargers didn’t want to bring me back,” Tranquill said on the Ross Tucker podcast in May. “There were people in the building that really wanted me back — and there were a few people who wanted to move on. Business is business, but when you give four years so hard to an organization and it doesn’t feel reciprocated, that’s hard.

“The Chiefs were adamant all week that they really wanted me. They had to figure out the tackle position with Orlando Brown leaving. I think just the championship culture there, the coaching staff, when you talk about Super Bowl-winning coaches, Brendan Daly, our linebackers coach, he’s done it in New England, done it with the Chiefs.”

Tranquill said on the podcast the Chiefs made a big push to sign him.

“So excited, talking to Andy Reid, talking to the linebackers coach, talking to Brett Veach,” Tranquill said. “They’re stoked to have me, they really wanted me, really pursued me hard.”

On Wednesday, Tranquill shared a photo of a text message he received from Reid before he signed with the Chiefs. Reid’s words proved to be prophetic.

“If you need to talk my phone is on ring,” Reid wrote. “Till then see Red and think Super Bowls.”

Tranquill signed with the Chiefs in May, and yep, he will be playing in Super Bowl LVIII.

Here is the photo that Tranquill shared.
