Roger Goodell: Officials could’ve been criticized for not flagging Kadarius Toney
Although Andy Reid didn’t say, “We’re on to New England,” the Chiefs have turned the page, and their focus is on Sunday’s game against the Patriots.
The dominant storyline in the NFL this week has been the penalty call on Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney that wiped out an amazing touchdown in KC’s 20-17 loss to the Bills.
Heck, even commissioner Roger Goodell weighed in on the subject Wednesday at the NFL owners meeting in Irving, Texas.
“I find it ironic that I’m answering a question about the officials getting it right and they’re getting criticized,” Goodell said, per USA Today.
While Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was enraged about the call, Goodell added that game officials may have been scrutinized for not throwing a flag in that situation.
“I think almost everybody, (to) my knowledge, is acknowledging the officials were absolutely correct,” Goodell said, per Yahoo Sports’ Jori Epstein. “That’s their job: to call when there’s a foul. There was no question about that foul. It was absolutely the right call.
“If you don’t call that, our officials would have been subject to criticism also.”
I’m not sure anyone would have noticed Toney was lined up offsides, but I guess it is possible.
