Chiefs’ Jaylen Watson unhappy to be flagged ahead of Bills’ winning field goal
Chiefs fans have probably had their fill of talk about The Penalty from Sunday’s loss to the Bills.
Coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes both decried the official’s decision to throw a flag on Kadarius Toney, but at least one other Chiefs player was unhappy about a different call.
This one came on the final Bills scoring drive. Buffalo had a third-and-10 play from the Chiefs’ 27-yard line when quarterback Josh Allen was sacked by George Karlaftis for a 4-yard loss. That would have set up a 48-yard field goal try for the Bills, but they instead picked up a first down.
That’s because Chiefs cornerback Jaylen Watson was penalized for illegal contact. The Bills’ drive still bogged down and they had to settle for a 39-yard field goal attempt, which Tyler Bass made. Those were the final points of the game.
Afterward, Watson wrote a message on X (formerly Twitter) and expressed his displeasure about the penalty.
“I pressed the same way the ENTIRE GAME,” Watson wrote in a message he has since deleted, “receiver just runs into me, usually refs give you a warning ex. (Watch your hands) but when its crunch time somehow a flags thrown?? Weird.”
Fortunately for Watson, the play likely didn’t cost the Chiefs the game. And that penalty was mostly forgotten by most fans who have been talking about that other one.
