Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce combine for stat that had 1 in 3,000 chance of happening
Are there enough superlatives to describe what Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce have combined to accomplish in their careers?
They’ve been an incredible pairing, and it goes beyond what they did in Sunday’s 31-17 win over the Chargers at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
To recap, Mahomes completed 32 of 42 pass attempts for 424 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. Kelce was targeted 13 times and caught 12 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown.
The one misfire came in the fourth quarter, and it ended an amazing stretch of completions from Mahomes to Kelce.
NFL Next Gen Stats said Mahomes had completed 28 straight passes to Kelce dating back to Week 5. If that sounds rare, it is.
According to the Next Gen calculations, there was just a 1 in 3,000 chance (0.03%) of there being a completion on every one of the 28 targets based on the completion probability of each attempt.
After the game, Kelce was interviewed by CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson, and Mahomes interrupted to say: “Greatest of all-time.”
Kelce said it wasn’t easy on Sunday.
“It was a challenge and that’s hats off to this defense and having to play against them every single week,” Kelce said. “And then have 1-5 just doing what he does. Everybody’s making it easy on me.”
