Former NFL player: Officials got it wrong on fumble call on Chiefs’ Blake Bell
In the end, this didn’t come back to bite the Chiefs.
But the Chiefs had a seven-point lead and were driving in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Chargers at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium when disaster struck.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed a pass to tight end Blake Bell, but he was ruled to have fumbled after making a catch and the Chargers’ Derwyn James recovered at the LA 19-yard line.
Instead of getting a field goal or perhaps a touchdown and pushing the Chiefs’ lead to double digits, the Chargers got the ball back.
Here’s the thing: Bell may not have actually caught the ball. At least that’s how some saw it. Here are two looks at the play.
CBS Sports broadcaster Jim Nantz said the play was reviewed and apparently upheld.
However, Former Broncos tight end Shannon Sharpe shared a message on X (formerly Twitter) saying that was not a catch, and Chiefs fans agreed. Some also sarcastically noted complaints from other fans that NFL officials routinely help the Chiefs, who won the game 31-17.
