Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy issued a challenge to the Chiefs earlier this week
The Chiefs piled up 389 yards of offense but settled for four field goals and just one touchdown in last Thursday’s 19-8 win over the Broncos.
For the season, the Chiefs rank fourth in total yards but are ninth in scoring.
That’s hardly alarming through the first six games of the season, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes told reporters after the win over the Broncos that the Chiefs’ offense “didn’t execute at a high enough level.”
Tight end Travis Kelce echoed that thought on this week’s “New Heights” podcast.
“You’ve got to put up touchdowns, man, you got to put up tuddies when you’re in the red zone,” Kelce said. “And on top of that, our defense is still playing their tail off and making our team look really good. We just have to find ways to frickin’ score touchdowns man.
“It’s just frustrating. And it’s hard because it’s like, you want to be the reason why we’re doing great, and right now it’s kind of up and down. It’s not great.”
Kelce said Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy issued a challenge to the unit earlier this week. Nagy wants the offense to stop talking about the need to improve its scoring output and actually do it.
“Coach Nagy, Matt Nagy our OC, one of my favorite guys, he challenged all of us this morning, actually, to stop saying we’re gonna fix it and go out there and do it,” Kelce said on the podcast, which was recorded Tuesday. “And do it and having some fun, man. We’ve got a lot of good, good personalities and a lot of great players on this team, especially on the offensive side.
“We’ve just got to find the groove and find the rhythm. And sure enough, we’re doing it, finding ways to win, but it’s not helping out our defense as much as we would love to. But that’s the biggest thing for me, it’s just being able to score touchdowns and not making it harder on our defense, man.”
