Chiefs and Broncos supporters thought refs got key roughing-the-passer penalty wrong
There won’t be any chatter around the NFL in the next 10 days about game officials being biased for the Chiefs.
At least there shouldn’t be.
During the Chiefs’ 19-8 win Thursday night over the Denver Broncos at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, there was one call that united fans of both sides.
It came in the fourth quarter when the Broncos had a third-down play at the Chiefs’ 22-yard line. Denver quarterback Russell Wilson dropped back and was drilled by the Chiefs’ Mike Edwards, who was blitzing.
The pass fell incomplete but Edwards was flagged for roughing the passer. Here is the play.
Did that look questionable? It did to former Colts/Patriots defensive back Darius Butler.
Ditto for former Broncos tight end Shannon Sharpe.
Sharpe wasn’t the only one with ties to the Broncos who questioned the call.
Chiefs fans also expressed their displeasure with the penalty, which gave Denver a first down. They scored a touchdown on the next play rather than face a fourth down.
