Chiefs fans not happy with play of receivers, especially Kadarius Toney, in Lions loss
Those nervous feelings Chiefs fans felt Tuesday when news broke of Travis Kelce’s knee injury were well-founded.
Without Kelce, the Chiefs’ offense didn’t look quite right in a 21-20 loss to the Detroit Lions in Thursday’s season opener at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
If there was one picture to sum up the night, it was this:
That ball went through Kadarius Toney’s hands and was returned by Detroit’s Brian Branch for a touchdown.
Fans shared their thoughts about the loss on X (nee Twitter) and Facebook and much of the discussion was about the Chiefs’ wide receivers and Toney in particular, and the number of passes that they dropped or allowed to get intercepted.
Some fans were also upset about defensive tackle Chris Jones, whose contract holdout continues.
This is a snippet of what was being said.
“This is what happens when a team member decides to not show up for their team … Also, maybe get some WRs that CAN catch the ball,” one fan wrote on Facebook.
A fan on Facebook wrote: “Need receivers that can actually hold onto to the ball when they catch it. Only one game, let’s go!!!”
Another shared this: “That all right only first game & this loss will wake them up, we got the whole season ahead of us!! Chiefs kingdom baby”
Fans frustrated by Chiefs WRs
A fan wrote on Facebook: “Love my Chiefs always and know it’s the first game of the season but why couldn’t they catch the ball Patrick threw some good passes and it’s like all the receivers greased their hands before the game”
