Video shows Cowboys’ reaction to first-round trade offer from the Chiefs on draft day

The Dallas Cowboys took a call from the Chiefs during the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

If the Chiefs had their way, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell would have announced a trade during the first day of the draft in Kansas City.

There were reports that the Chiefs wanted to move up from 31st overall to 26th, which was where the Dallas Cowboys were picking. The Chiefs reportedly had their eye on Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith.

But Dallas turned down the trade proposal and took Smith.

What were the Chiefs offering for the opportunity to swap first-round picks? A third-round choice. That’s something we learned from a Cowboys video that showed the reaction in Dallas’ war room.

As the Cowboys were discussing the merits of picking Smith over Syracuse guard Matthew Bergeron, the phone rings. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones answers, and it apparently was someone from the Chiefs calling.

“You offered what number?” Jones asks. “Let us talk about that real quick.”

He turns to his father, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and says, “The question is: do you want to go back five spots for their third?”

Jerry Jones asks the room: “If we lose these two players and get that three, how sick are we if we just give up the three and take one of these players?”

It seems the the Cowboys never were that interested in making the deal with the Chiefs.

Here is the video.
