Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes is ranked first on two lists of the NFL’s best quarterbacks
Patrick Mahomes is coming off an NFL MVP season and he was the Super Bowl LVII MVP, too, as the Chiefs beat the Eagles.
Thus, it should be of little surprise that Mahomes tops The Athletic’s annual ranking of quarterbacks. Mike Sando spoke with 50 people in the NFL, ranging from coaches to general managers to coordinators, and they put quarterbacks into one of five tiers.
Mahomes is the only player to be ranked in the top tier of quarterbacks by all 50 NFL. Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow is second on the list, followed by Buffalo’s Josh Allen and New York Jets’ Aaron Rodgers. Seven of the top eight quarterbacks play in the AFC.
An executive for another NFL team lavished praise on Mahomes, 27, and believes he can be even better going forward.
“He’s clearly the best player in the league and just entering the front end of his prime window,” the executive told Sando. “He reminds (me) so much of Rodgers.
“This is the time in his career where, just like Rodgers, the final polishing of his game will be in his play-clock manipulation, calling timeouts and knowing even better when to give up on plays.”
Mahomes tops Fox’s list
Fox Sports also shared a quarterback ranking, as its writers chose the top 10 at that position this season.
Mahomes was No. 1.
“There’s little question, after what he did in 2022, that Mahomes is the best quarterback in the NFL,” Henry McKenna wrote. “Travis Kelce has always been a tremendous boon to Mahomes. But over the past few years, the Chiefs have given Mahomes fewer and fewer playmakers. It hasn’t mattered.“
